At the beginning of our project during the research and planning stage I researched the different conventions in all music videos. This gave a a basic understanding as to what you would expect to see in our finished product. I then went on to look at the conventions specific to our chosen genre, pop. I looked in detail at the mise-en-scene of a range of different pop videos as well as the cinematography and the editing techniques used. From these I was able to begin thinking of ideas that I needed to include to allow it to be a part of this genre as well as developing the ideas I already had. With my ideas I got from the conventions we created surveys using SurveyMonkey to ask people of our target audience what they expected to see in pop videos and also ask their opinions on some of the ideas we had.
We decided to challenge a number of conventions as we wanted the brand image of our artist to be unique and stand out in the pop industry. One convention we challenged quite a lot was the idea that pop videos are bright and colourful. To challenge this we decided to use dark lighting in some of the shots as well as the artist not always looking overly happy. Although we challenged this we still included bright colours from the balloons and bright lighting as we still wanted to keep to the pop genre. As well as challenging the conventions we also developed many of them. For example we were inspired by a few video that had done an extreme close-up of the artists lips whilst lip syncing. We liked this idea a lot and developed it by adding a leopard print lip tattoo.
